Speed Limits in Mexico (they are in kilometer/hour)
The speed limit signs in Mexico are in Km/per hour (NOT miles per hour), so be mindful and drive the speed limit, especially while in the town of Sonoyta. FYI, Sonoyta is the small town that you enter as you cross the border. You will drive in Sonoyta for approximately 15 minutes. Once you are through Sonoyta, you will enjoy a beautiful desert drive for around an hour. It’s important to understand the difference between miles per hour and kilometers per hour. Most vehicles have kilometers on the speedometer indentified by smaller numbers next to the larger numbers. Digital speedometers can also be programmed for kilometers refer to your auto manual for more information.
You will also want to be on the look out for ALTO signs… aka STOP signs as you drive through Sonoyta.
If you get pulled over by the police for speeding, running a stop sign or other traffic violations, just remain calm, polite and pay your fines at the police station. There may be times your pulled over even when following the law. The officer may demand that the fine be paid directly to the officer. Continue to remain calm and polite. At that point, some travelers decide to pay fines to the officer instead of delaying vacation plans. The choice is up to you, but the normally recommended way is to pay at the police station.
